Konan City is located in the northern part of Noubi plain and the southern coast of clear stream of
Kiso River.
It is the 24th biggest city in Aichi prefecture with an area 30.17 square kilometer, 6.1-km of east and
west, 8.8 km of north and south. The geographical feature s of the district is mostly flat in fan shape.
The alluvial fan is fertile by the favor of Kiso River. Along with this, the mild climate and the favored
natural feature made the natural environment optimum for the living. By the profit of convenience to
be situated on the 20-km area from Nagoya (biggest city in the prefecture) and to be linked within
about 20 minutes by the public traffic organization, and so on, the town has been developed as a
commuters town. It has also become the main city in the advancement, in northern part of Aichi
prefecture as major traffic junction point to Gifu prefecture, which is the other side of Kiso River.

　Ancient people were already living in this region in the old times, from the end earthen vessel times.
Two ancient tombs, Futagoyama (twin mountain) and Fujitsuka (Fuji hill), were built in the old burial
mound times from the 4th century to the 6th century. After the times of the manorial period, in the
country engaged in civil war times, the town became the headquarters of "Kitsuno" who was a
concubine of Nobunaga Oda, the shogun of the period. In Edo period, 36 villages were established.

　After the establishment of the fence bank, which was built around the 17th century solved the dange
r of the flood, the new rice paddy and water for irrigation were developed, and agriculture, which utilized
rich land, progressed.
The sericulture and so on became popular in Meiji era and the silk textile industry came in practice.
Later on, a chemical fiber textile (the rayon) industry, too, became popular and the city became a silk
and rayon textile production center. In the first year of Taisho era (1912), Inuyama line was opened by
Nagoya Railroad Company (Meitetsu), which made its tie with the neighboring towns strong.

　In June 1st, 1954, by the affiliation of four towns and villages, the present Konan City started
functioning.
