The Jokan Temple belongs to Soto sect of Buddhism. The date of establishment is unknown but it is said that it started around 850 by enshrining a statue of iron Ksitigarbha bodhisattva.

Jokan Temple is famous for the standing position statue of cast iron Ksitigarbha bodhisattva, however, the principal image is Shakyamuni. Shakyamuni is the founder of Buddhism and who practiced asceticism to help four agonies of human beings, such as living, aging, sickness, and death.

Around 1558, the temple decayed extremely and the chief priest had to repair it by himself to maintain the temple to function. Later, the help of Toshitoyo, the 5th generation, and Toshikatsu, the 6th generation of Ikoma family reconstructed the temple and it became a beautiful temple.

Since this temple is the branch temple of Kyusho Temple, which enshrines Nobunaga's concubine, "Kitsuno", it was prospered under the protection of Ikoma family.

The standing position statue of cast iron Ksitigarbha bodhisattva was specified as a cultural property of the prefecture in July 1960. It is noted as one of the six Jizos in Owari.
